We’ve heard before about a Sony PSP2 device, a next-gen handheld console that will reportedly dispense with the much-maligned UMD drive and focus more on downloadable content. Well, now an insider source says it’s coming very soon – and has been designed to smash Apple’s iPhone and iPod touch into a million tiny pieces.
The source (apparently a games developer who is already using the hardware, but not previous Sony PSP2 blabbermouth Dave Perry) told PocketGamer that the device will be on sale by Christmas this year and will be radically different from the current PSP, taking a lot of design cues from the iPhone and iPod touch.
The Sony PSP2 is dominated by a large touchscreen, just like Apple’s devices, but one-ups them by also including real physical controls when slid open – d-pads, buttons and even dual analogue sticks.
As Dave Perry claimed, UMD has been dropped in favour of an all-digital download service via Sony’s PlayStation Store, and Sony PSP2 games will range from the hardcore to the more casual fare that’s currently going great guns on the iPhone and iPod touch, not to mention the newly-launched Nintendo DSi.
While this is all speculation, it certainly makes a lot of sense – and we should find out how accurate PocketGamer’s source is at the E3 show in June, when the Sony PSP2 should get an official launch.
