The Segway PUMA is currently a concept, but could go intro production eventually.

Segway, famous for its self-balancing two-wheeled one-person electric vehicle, has teamed up with General Motors to develop the Segway PUMA, an EV concept able to accommodate two people and travel at a speed of up to 35mph.

Like the original Segway, the Segway PUMA balances on two wheels, but it also features a windscreen, protective cage and crucially, two seats – making it much more suitable for city use. It even drives and parks autonomously, although Segway and GM are pretty unclear on exactly how this system works.

It can travel 35 miles on a single charge, and its dinky size should ensure parking isn’t much of a problem, but perhaps the most interesting aspect of the Segway PUMA is that it can connect to other PUMAs in an Internet-style network that informs drivers about traffic congestion, parking spaces and so on.

The Segway PUMA is just a concept design at the moment, and more of a demonstration of what is possible rather than something we’re going to see flitting down Oxford Street before the end of the year. Still, we’ll keep you posted on developments.
