The iPhone 3.0 beta really is the news item that keeps on giving. After the (supposed) revelations about video editing, sending video via Mobile Me, bloggers have found evidence in the depths of iPhone OS 3.0 that the new iPhones may come with an FM Transmitter.

The iPhone 3.0 FM transmitter hint was spotted by bloggers at 9to5Mac.com in data stored within the OS 3.0 beta that describes new wireless hardware supported by the OS. The new Broadcomm BCM4325 chips can be used to transmit on FM frequencies. This could mean that those plug-in FM transmitters will soon be a thing of the past and you will be able to broadcast your iPhone to the nearest stereo.

Receiving FM data is actually possible on current-gen iPhones, its just that the function has been effectively disabled for any frequency other than that used by the Nike+ sports monitor. The new hardware would just add the ability (potentially at least) to transmit on the FM spectrum as well.

Even if Apple decide to disable FM broadcasts on the new hardware (which would be a very Apple thing to do) the Broadcomm chips will at least offer low-power, high speed 802.11n wif which may make the battery last a little longer and make streaming video a more welcome prospect.
