Wi-Fi could be the new standard for device-to-device connectivity, and much sooner than we think, according to the Wi-Fi Alliance. Buh bye, Bluetooth!
IntoMobile has bagged this slide from Wi-Fi Alliance, the trade association that promotes wireless networks, which shows that the organisation is working on device-to-device connectivity over Wi-Fi, meaning much faster speeds than Bluetooth currently offers, and by 2010!
At the moment, Wi-Fi requires an active network in the area to work, but with device-to-device Wi-Fi, devices would be able to transfer data at Wi-Fi speeds without having to be in range of a Wi-Fi router.
The Wi-Fi Alliance says that mobile phones will be a huge part of Wi-Fi device-to-device, which is hardly surprising, given it also estimates that shipments of Wi-Fi enabled mobiles will hit 300 million by 2011. Exciting, eh? Start saying your fond farewells to Bluetooth, and we’ll be back with more when we hear it.
