Sky is clearly deadly serious about its 3D technology. The company confirmed last last year that it could broadcast 3D telly using the existing Sky HD box, and last night it went one better by doing it live.
Yesterday evening Sky filmed a live Abbey Road show by “rockers” Keane in 3D, and broadcasted it live in no less than three different ways. Firstly the gig was simulcast via a hi-def satellite transponder to a 46-inch 3D HDTV in another part of the Abbey Road studios, where a VIP audience was able to watch it as it happened. This is the key broadcast, because it involved a standard Sky HD set-top box.
A live test broadcast also went to a cinema kitted out with 3D gear, while a 3D webcast also went out over the Internet, which Keane fans all over the world could watch using old style red and green glasses.
While Sky hasn’t actually broken any huge boundaries by doing this, it has made good on its claims that it can successfully broadcast live 3D TV using standard gear – gear that a lot of us already have in our living rooms. Now we’ve just got to save up for that 3D screen…
