Samsung is planning to launch its first mobile to run the Android operating system in June this year. The phone will be available exclusively in Europe, with two further handsets headed for the US market later in the year.
Samsung has kept the new device closely under wraps, with just a few leaked details and one spy shot that is so blurry it looks like it was taken from the Hubble space telescope. The only specs available are rumours of a 528 MHz processor, some manner of camera and HSDPA/HSUPA support.
The first of Samsung’s planned ANdroid phone will debut in Europe in June, although Samsung is saving two more for the US once the waters have been thoroughly tested.
Samsung is said to be adding a layer of customisation to Android that may remove some of the ‘Googleness’ from the OS.
“Our commitment is more to the Android phone than the Google Experience device,” said Samsung’s global product strategy chap Dr. Won-Pyo Hong. This may include some effort to bundle carrier-specific (and almost inevitably lame, though we are happy to be proved wrong) apps instead of the default suite.
