Sony has just updated its PlayTV digital TV PVR for the PlayStation 3, adding built-in upscaling that should boost the detail and contrast of standard def pictures.
We’re not exactly sure of the tech behind this specific upscaling, but it seems likely that the PS3’s Cell processor is being used to work out where extra detail should go to make SD images look more like HD. We’re itching to give it a whirl to see how it stacks up against the upscalers built into TVs like the Toshiba Resolution+ range (which I personally found a tad disappointing).
The free update, available now, is explained in a little bit more detail in a video clip over at the semi-official PS3 blog Three Speech, where PlayTV producer Mark Bunting also claims that Sony would like to expand the tuner into the HD world as soon as possible, but is waiting on terrestrial HD broadcasts to become more widespread first.
Bunting also said that Sony would make further improvements to PlayTV based on user feedback.
