Whoops. A rough cut of X-Men Origins: Wolverine just leaked online, despite the fact that the blockbuster won’t be out in cinemas until the end of the month. What is going on?
X-Men Origins, about how Wolverine got his claws, is supposed to be 20th Century Fox’s cash cow for the summer season, but X-Men: Origins already popped up on the web, and an estimated 100,000 people have downloaded it already.
Fox is doing its hardest to remove the work print of X-Men: Origins before release, but that’s shutting the door after the horse has bolted. What’s unusual about this is that a working (unfinished) edit of such a huge film should leak out – we haven’t seen that happen since Star Wars Episode III, four years ago.
So, either Fox hired a Pirate Bay supporter recently without realising, or somebody in the Fox hierarchy seriously peeved somebody else off. At any rate, Fox plans to “prosecute to the fullest extent of the law”, and the FBI is even investigating. We’ll let you know if the culprit is caught, but we think we’ll be skipping this and watching X-Men Origins in the cinema instead.
