PS3 users can now download the latest firmware update for the console, which adds Text Chat for up to 16 people, as well as a handful of other improvements. Read on for the full lowdown.
Firmware 2.70′s headlining feature is definitely the Text Chat function, which works with the Wireless Keypad, on-screen keyboard and other supported keyboard peripherals. The chat works while you’re playing a game, and you can have up to three chat windows running simultaneously.
Elsewhere, the update improves the XrossMediaBar’s friends list, enabling you to sort your friends via their online status and attach larger (up to 3MB) files to messages you send.
US users will be able to back up their purchased video files to an external storage device (although they’ll only play once restored to the PS3 hard drive), and videos bought on PSP can be transferred over to the PS3 to watch.
Other features include copy-and-paste for moving text from the web browser to the PS3′s text entry, and a dynamic normaliser for the music player, which reduces volume changes between songs.
