“Killzone 2 could totally be done” on the Microsoft Xbox 360, says Christian Allen, a games designer who previously worked at Bungie, the company behind the Halo series on the Xbox 360. Killzone 2 is Sony’s best attempt yet to directly rival Halo’s epic first-person shooter success, on the PS3.

While Killzone 2′s visuals have been nearly universally feted as making it the best looking first-person shooter ever, Allen believes this is not down to any superiority in the PS3′s power compared to the Microsoft Xbox 360. Allen told HipHopGamer: “Halo could come to PS3. It really comes down to console exclusivity. The tech differences between the PS3 and the 360 aren’t all that much.”

Allen also believes that developing for the Microsoft Xbox 360 used to be easier, but the differences between the two consoles are now very small. Of course, Killzone 2 will never come to the Xbox 360, in the same way Halo will never go to the PS3 – these exclusive titles are what drive gamers to one console over another. But Allen is not the first developer to admit that underneath it all, the Sony PS3 and Microsoft Xbox 360 are more alike than they are different.

I really don’t think KZ2 quality visuals could be done on the Xbox360.

Look at everthing in the last year on XBox360, has the quality of graphics moved AT ALL? Nope…

The PS3 is increasing it’s visuals on a month by month basis, However the Xbox is stationary it seems.

What is also juicy, is that the tech behind KZ2 will be licenced to other 1st party and 2nd party developers, so expect all PS3 titles to look as good, if not better than KZ2 very soon.

THE BAR HAS BEEN RAISED.. Xbox seems it can’t jump anywhere close to it anymore.

  • FagburgAaron

word simon. its funny no MS is havin bungie say this crap. and no the xbox technically couldnt have done it. while it may have been similar, the physics, and AI would have been severely crippled, which are two of the big things bout KZ2 that kick a$$. plus who wants to swap discs on a FPS?????

  • http://www.gravatar.com Simon Munk

    Simon/Aaron,

While swapping discs is a pain, it’s not the end of the world.
As to visuals: “The PS3 is increasing it’s visuals on a month by month basis, However the Xbox is stationary it seems.” I’d disagree fairly heavily. Both consoles have their fair share of superb visuals – Gears 2 versus Killzone 2, is a very close call (yes, I agree, KZ wins on visuals).
But as to AI and physics? I haven’t yet seen any game on either console that really stands out as not-doable on the others.
Plus, I’ll take the seasoned view of many developers over those of us (me included) who don’t know how to code.

There is absolutely no way you will ever see a game as good looking as Killzone 2 on the 360. There has been virtually no improvement in 360 graphics in the last 2 years. The best looking game was Gears of War and that was slightly trupmed by Gears of War 2. Its pretty clear there isnt much more in it.

On the other hand the best looking games in every genre are all PS3 exclusives.

    Racing – GT5 Prologue
    FPS – Killzone 2
    3rd person action – Uncharted
3rd person shooter – Metal Gear Solid 4
    Platformer – LitleBigPlanet

When you look at the recent Cryengine tech demo for the 360 and PS3 the PS3 is considerably better, a fact which was confirmed by Crytek themselves.

This ex Bungie employee is either a Microsoft shill or utterly clueless about the PS3.

  • DAVID

    @ Simon

If you think its a close call between Gears 2 and Killzone 2 you cant possibly have played both games.

Killzone 2 is by far the most impressive console game ever made graphically and its physics and AI are considerably better than Gears 2.

The PS3 is by far the more powerful console. Its not even debatable.

  • http://www.gravatar.com Simon Munk

David: “you cant possibly have played both games” No, of course I can’t. It’s not as if I’m a professional games journo or anything. Or maybe I’m just blind, eh?
David: “The PS3 is by far the more powerful console. Its not even debatable.” Again, is it not debatable? A lot of more informed people than me (and I suspect, you) – developers who have to get to grips in real situations with both – have said it’s a fairly close run thing in terms of overall power.
Yes, the PS3 is theoretically more powerful than the Xbox 360. And yes, Killzone 2 certainly looks nicer than anything else. But I’d be willing to bet we’ll see a better-looking X360 game before the end of its life cycle. And a better-looking PS3 game than that, probably.

I think it’s becoming evident that the XBOX 360 is beginning to show it’s age far faster than Microsoft intended. This posturing by Microsoft and companies like Bungie is clearly a strategy to try and counter such an image. The attempt to bring out additional HDD’s, console revisions, HD DVD drive’s and now an ailing list of games is but more evidence the 360 is on the way out. The PS3 has potential and that is something the 360 can no longer achieve. It’s time for Microsft to launch a new console or accept the inevitable.

  • Rimmer

What makes you guys such experts to be able to contradict someone who actually works in the industry just because he decided to cut through the marketing hype from MS and Sony? Killzone 2 looks so good because it has a well written engine. It has bugger all to do with the hardware. Seriously, why do you guys get your knickers in such a twist because you refuse to accept that the hardware in both consoles is so similar?

  • bazzerk

Rimmer, thank you for being the only person to post some common sense on this subject! The way I see it is that the PS3 and Xbox 360 are basically the same, and the cell is nothing compared to the PC processors we are seeing now. If it were dont you think we would be seeing it in everything as we were promised? Guess what guys it never happened and never will. I have killzone 2 and it looks nice but dont for one second think it is the best game ever created, because it isn’t! Nice graphics dont make a great game guys and any way they are not as good as some people are making out. Also, if you think these consoles are going to have a 10-year lifespan without anything coming out before then, you are living a la-la-land!

  • DAVID

    @ Rimmer

If you think the only reason Killzone 2 looks better than anything on the 360 is completely down to the engine you haven’t got a clue what you are talking about. The engine is possible because of the hardware.

I suggest you read this from Guerilla games which details exactly how they used the PS3 hardware.

    http://www.scribd.com/doc/6522844/Deferred-Rendering-in-Kill-Zone

    @ Simon

You haven’t seen anything on either console thats not doable on the other yet you say you have played Killzone 2?

You will not see a better looking game than Killzone 2 on the 360. Its easier to develop for than the PS3 and its been out a year longer so why haven’t we seen a game as graphically good yet? Give me one good reason

Tell me why the best looking game in 2009 on the easy to develop for 360 is only slightly better looking than one released in 2006? Its because there isn’t much left in the tank. Thats the trouble with using PC based architecture in your console. Sure its piss easy to dev for but that means you are pushing its limits very early on. You will get small increases in quality such as with the Gears titles but not much else. On the other hand the PS3 will continue to see considerable graphical improvements for years to come just like the PS2 did and thats because the hardware is far more complex.

You realize that most people developing for the PS3 still aren’t using the SPU’s? They are ignoring them and coding just for the CPU and GPU like for the 360. Just to give you an idea of what that means for the future Guerilla had the PS3′s SPU’s handling physics, audio, particles and loads of other stuff.

Take a look at the Cryengine demo. This is a port of the most demanding graphics engine in gaming. It runs perfectly on the PS3 with no pop-in at all but on the 360 there is a load of pop-in and less detail, despite the 360′s architecture being far more similar to the PC platform which the engine was originally designed for. As I said before even Crytek confirmed it runs better on the PS3 at GDC.

Now I am far more inclined to believe what they say having just developed an engine for both consoles and are showing hard evidence of their results than what an ex Microsoft guy with zero experience developing for the PS3 and who is now making iphone games says.

  • bazzerk

David, all I can say is LOL!!!!! I own a PS3 and it basically gets used as a rather expensive blue-ray player. I’m sorry but for me it is just a big disappointment like the 360! Its overated and my PC with its so called PC architecture kicks its ass big time. Stop living in dreamland and start talking sense. Oh and as for your remark regarding some ex-employee of microsoft, he worked for Bungie which was allowed to part from Microsoft and do its own stuff, including working on other platforms! Yes he has now parted company with them but I think I would take his word over yours any day of the week. So tell us all about this complex hardware and how it becomes more amazing as time goes by!!! (Sorry you sound like a anthropologist). Fanboys they do my feckin’ head in!!! I plead with you all to stop reading the rubbish on websites and actually investigate for yourselves, you just quote references from people who have vested interests in certain systems and dont have a clue what any of it means.

Take a look at IBM’s white pages regarding the almighty cell processor, you will be shocked to learn that they actually say it is considerably less powerful than it was hyped up to be! Sony has even sold the rights of it to Toshiba, this brings into question its use in the next console. You say how do I know they intended to use this architecture in the next console? Well do you know how much it costs to create a completely new chip from scratch each time? Sony are one of the greatest line spinners in the world while M$ they just buy their technology. This is not stealing though for all the idiots who keep insisting it is!

  • Futbollfan

What Christian hasn’t brought up is the fact that the PS3 has Blu-ray, and the Xbox 360 does not. That makes a huge difference in the amount of textures that can be stored on-disk. Considering that Valve is having difficulty with textures on the Xbox 360 version of a shooter they’re making vs the PS3 version of that game, it’s a sure bet that the PS3 version of the game will look better than the 360.

So, even ‘slight’ differences such as storage media bring to light the advantages that the PS3 has over the 360 from a development perspective.

  • admon

Futbollfan dude i know that ps3 maybe a bit more powerful then the but all games that come on ps3 and 360 as u said “the PS3 version of the game will look better than the 360″ i will think not all games that goes multi console or most are better on the 360 and am not making that up u can go on the net and look that up and pls do am not a 360 fan lol but i tell wat i say MS is making the new console anyways with HD DVD used for games which goes up to 250GB a disc if that happen then dont think ps3 would be talking about blu ray

  • Rimmer

David, all that that shows is how a very good engine has been adapted to use PS3′s specific hardware. Where does its say that they couldn’t do the same thing by using the CPU cores on the 360? The SPUs may be more powerful at the task they have been assigned to by the developers, but then they have to overcome the shortcomings of the GPU compared to the 360 and the memory management problems. Swings in roundabouts if you ask me.
The big question is – how much time have Guerilla had to spend on getting the engine to work on the ps3? Would they have made such a huge investment if they hadn’t been heavily subsidized by Sony?
Admon – you seem to know a lot more than everyone else on the net about MS’s plans for the next console – care to enlighten us about your sources?

  • admon

hmmm wouldnt bee 100% about but from wat MS said about sony’s 10 years for ps3 that means they are thinking about making new console am not 100% from looks maye true http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2009/03/zoo_weeklys_xbox_360_and_ps4_designs_will_never_ever_happen.htm
i would say MS’s console would come befor sonys we will see

  • lonchaney76

Who cares, the PS3 continues to be in dead last and will be for this entire generation. All these posts remind me of the morons talking about the “emotion engine” in the PS2 and how we ain’t seen nothing yet. Keep talking PS3 owners. Your saving grace of Killzone 2 is already yesterdays news and it sold very poorly for a AAA game. You say Halo and people recognize immediately, you say Killzone 2 and outside of foolish PS3 owners it’s a dead on arrival 1st party property.

  • TheGlue29

To Mr. Christian Allen, I have to say the following:

    Yeah, you couldn’t have.

As for the resultant fanboys…grow up, lose your virginity and get jobs.

Worldwide, MS has sold 28 million 360s and Sony has sold 21 million PS3s. MS didn’t go out of business on the original Xbox, despite Sony’s PS2 outselling it by over 100 million consoles, so it’s safe to say neither Sony nor MS are getting out of the gaming industry any time soon.

So really all your whining back and forth is just pointless drivel.

And to take it a step further, if any of you ACUTALLY care how well Sony or MS does, but you’re not a STOCKHOLDER in either company, then you’re a LOSER. Plain and simple.

  • Zen

But Allen is not the first developer to admit that underneath it all, the Sony PS3 and Microsoft Xbox 360 are more alike than they are different. <— except the xbox 360 has a 54% failure rate.

  • anonymous

the only way to know if killzone 2 is possible on 360 is if you are a veteran developer on both consoles
