Nokia has today announced an upgrade to its Nokia Messaging push email service. Nokia Messaging now counts Windows Live Hotmail among its supported email accounts and has added the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic to its list of compatible devices. Best of all, it’s free.

To get Nokia Messaging up and running on your Nokia X5800 ExpressMusic or other compatible handset (check out the list of supported models here), all you need to do is hit up the Nokia Messaging website, fill out your details and then a link will be sent to your handset.

Once installed, you can receive instant alerts from up to ten personal email accounts. Supported account types include Windows Live Hotmail, Yahoo! Mail, Gmail, AOL Mail and more. You can add them either directly from the phone itself, or using the website interface.

Hotmail support may prove to be one of the strongest cards in Nokia Messaging’s hand, and could be of significant benefit to Microsoft’s service too. Over recent years, Microsoft’s free email accounts have lost ground to Gmail, thanks to Google’s superb design and that packs in more features than Hotmail. The IM side has also been slowly over shadowed by texting, Skype, rival chat programs and more recent innovations like Twitter.
