iPhone pirates are fighting it out in a battle for the very Internet itself! Well, the bit of it that contains pirated iPhone apps anyway. Amazingly, this is not an April Fool’s gag.

iPhone pirates – that’s people who provide pirated versions of App Store apps, not people who sail the high seas wearing an iPatch and playing Tap Tap Revenge – are engaged in spat over who has the ‘right’ to distribute their booty.

Installous (from hacking outfit Hackulous)  is an that allows free access to other, pirated apps – sort of an App Store for thieving cheapskates. Rival team Mega has launched its own own app service – with the difference that Mega charges a subscription fee of $9.99 for 1 month, $23.99 for 3 months and $41.99 for 6 months.

This incensed Hackulous (as did the possibility that Mega nicked some code from them to create their app) and they have responded with Grabulous – an app that gives full access to all of Mega’s hosted apps, but manages to circumvent Mega’s subscription system. Ouch. It’s iPhone Pirate versus iPhone Pirate. Throw in some iPhone Ninjas and we have a real party.

Mega now claim not to be asking for any money – but they are still offering ripped-off iPhone apps, as are Hackulous, so lets not all start slapping them on the back just yet.
