UPDATE: Yeah, that PS3 price cut isn’t happening. Sony‘s gone and slashed the price of the PS2 instead to $100 in the US. Does that thrill anyone?

The Sony PS3 could finally be about to get that price cut: Sony‘s let slip that a major PlayStation announcement is due tomorrow, sending gamers into a frenzy over possible price drops.

It would be mighty strange for Sony to drop PlayStation news the week after the Games Developers Conference, but it looks like the long-rumoured Sony PS3 price cut is about to materialise. A Sony gaming announcement is due on Tuesday, and we reckon it might just be a Sony PS3 price drop.

Sony’s been taking a bit of a battering of late, with profits down and the older Xbox 360 still going strong against the PS3 in sales, but a price cut could be enough to tempt gamers to splash out. If the Japanese games giant can lower the price point, it could be enough to catapult the Sony PS3 up the charts.

Of course, there’s no guarantee the PS3 will see a price cut. Sony’s keeping quiet until tomorrow, and a “PlayStation announcement” could just as much relate to the PS2, PSP, or even a PSP phone, rather than a Sony PS3 price cut.

That said, these rumours have been building for a long time, so a PS3 price cut is where we’re placing our bets. The question is, how low can Sony go? We’ll let you know as soon as a Sony PS3 price cut, or whatever is up Sony’s sleeve, breaks.

I’m guessig if it is a price drop, it’ll only be about 25quid. Not even enough of a saving to buy a game!

Price Cut. Sony’s financial year runs April 1st – April 1st.

An announcement the day before would suggest their target last year was to remain profitable on PS3 by not price cutting in 2008 fiscal year and reducing PS3 component costs.

The 45nm PS3′s are due soon, and I would expect by now they are making money on PS3′s (they were break even about 5 months back). Perhaps they now see that a £250 price point it viable.

However I suspect it’s more than that. I suspect it’s a multi-prong approach to fully close that 360 gap, a price cut, and perhaps some new firmware features, and maybe PS2 emulation and announcement that PS2 production is ceasing.

If they did that, what with the awesome lineup of PS3 titles for 2009, then Microsoft have serious problems on their hands, they have done all their pricecutting and they are now back to losing money on 360′s again, if they lose marketshare too, then it’s really bad news.

If its just a PS2 price drop then that is such a cop out. There must be legions of gamers out there (me included) who are just waiting for the PS3 price point comes down and the longer Sony hold out, the more they are shooting themselves in the foot.

I think it could be a price drop, 2.70 firmware details (something big) & HOME coming out of Beta. on the psp a list of PSP games planned to be released on download.

Actually I don’t think it will be a pricecut.

PS3 is selling very well in regions outside North America, (and there is tracking close to the 360).

The game lineup for PS3 in 2009 is strong enough to sell the already great value PS3..

    I recon it’s new features (Firmware 2,70?) or a PS2 price cut.
