Aptly named Wolfenstein 3D Classic has just taken up residence on the iTunes Store, available to download for iPhone and iPod Touch. The App costs a mere £2.99 and sports a whole new control interface designed to suit the multi-touch interface. Although all you actually need is forwards, back, left right and shoot.
If you know Wolfenstein 3D, then you’ll have a pretty good idea of what the iPhone port is all about – running around shooting Nazis with a number of increasingly hilarious weapons.
If you haven’t heard of Wolfenstein 3D then, well, you’re pretty much a lost cause. You’ll probably have heard of its successors Doom and Quake from the legends of FPS, id Software, though right? Oh come on.
Here’s a quick recap then: first released in 1992, Wolfenstein 3D stars B.J. Blazkowicz who escapes from his Nazi prison cell and begins a quite unlikely rampage that climaxes with the death of Hitler himself. The game was so popular that it is widely acknowledged as the father of the modern day shooter.
If you missed out on the original, you really owe it to yourself to check out this little piece of gaming history. If you don’t have an iPhone, you can rest assured that we’ll still be seeing reissues of Wolfenstein 3D in some form or other in another 17 years. And 17 years after that.
So, in a nut shell: Nazis, chain gun, Mecha-Hitler, iPhone , £2.99. Enjoy.
Oh, and if you’ve got a jailbroken iPhone, you can get the open source port for free here.
