Dell supremo and namesake Michael Dell hasn’t exactly dismissed those ‘boring Dell smartphone‘ rumours out of hand, nor has he ‘fessed up and confirmed them. What he has done instead is dance around the issue and sort-of-nearly-but-not-quite admit that a phone is in development.
Dell can’t have been happy about people saying their smartphone plans were a bit rubbish and it is presumably in no hurry to confirm that, yes, there is a phone and, no, nobody liked it. In a speech in Tokyo this week, however,Michael Dell did give out some strong hints that the company is planning.. something.
“For the last three years we have integrated 3G radios into our notebooks,” said Dell. “It wouldn’t be unreasonable to expect that we would have smaller mobile Internet devices or smartphones in the future.”
Rumours of a Dell smartphone have been circulating for the past year and they are expected to produce some kidn of Android-powered handset. An ‘mobile internet device’ might imply something a bit broader, though. Technically an iPhone or a G1 would fit the bill, but perhaps somethinig more like the Nokia internet tablet may be in the works.
