Bioshock developers 2K Boston (the artists formerly known as Irrational Games) are all excited about their new project, but typically unwilling to actually tell us what it is.
Bioshock broke new ground in terms of artisanal level design and involving backstory as well as giving the shooter genre a much-needed (and still needed – check out Killzone 2) kick up the backside. Now 2K Boston have handed over Bioshock 2 duties to sister studio 2K Marin and have got themselves in a lather about their new mystery project.
“2K Boston is focused on our next project,” said 2K’s Ken Levine “which will probably come as a huge surprise to our audience and yet at the same time will make total sense once they see it.”
“Besides delivering on the narrative experience we’re known for,” he continued, “it will include a type of gameplay that is completely new to us–something the BioShock team has never really explored in depth before. In all areas (art, design, and programming), we spend half our day being totally psyched, and half our day wondering what we’ve gotten ourselves into. We’re kind of humbled by the challenge.”
Well, colour us intrigued. What could this new type of gameplay involve? 2K publishes strategy games (Civilization IV) Sports (Don King Boxing) and rubbish Wii party games (Carnival) but Levine only mentioned the ‘Bioshock team’ by name. We have our fingers crossed for a Bioshockian take on Noby Noby Boy or something equally oddball.
