Netflix has been an ace in up Microsoft’s sleeve since November, eclipsing Sony’s rival video download service with the huge library of Netflix streaming titles, but it could be about to lose that particular position if Netflix and Nintendo cosy up. The movie rental service has been sending round a survey asking Wii owners if they’d consider paying a one off, $10 fee to get movie streaming direct to their console.
“Imagine that, as an added benefit to DVDs by mail, Netflix offers its members the ability to watch movies & TV episodes instantly on their TV via their Nintendo Wii,” the survey bids. To enable the service, you’d just need a Netflix account and a Netflix Instant Streaming Disc, costing around £7.
If a Nintendo were to partner with Netflix in earnest, it could of course apply the same software via a console update, but sticking in a special Netflix disc isn’t much of a chore either.
This only leaves Sony out in the cold, with its still growing Video section of the PlayStation Store (if you live in the US, that is). Rumour has it, however, that PS3 owners have been receiving a similar survey, although that is currently unconfirmed.
