Dell still hasn’t unveiled that smartphone that it’s rumoured to be working on, and now a comment from an industry consultant suggests why – it just isn’t very good.

Dell’s smartphone has taken many forms since the industry buzz suggested it was in the works. First it was a Windows Mobile device, more recently an Android-powered phone. Despite the persistant reports and leaks, Dell still hasn’t shown anything off in public.

Kaufman Bros analyst Shaw Wu, has reportedly said that there is a very good reason for this – Dell has finished the device (actually intended to run either Windows Mobile or Android) but failed to impress any of the mobile carriers who saw a demo of the prototype.

Unfortunately for Dell, the comment that accompanied the rejection was that the phone was “too Dell-like,” – surely the last thing a company wants to hear about its brand. Carriers also cited a “lack of differentiation” between the phone and similar products form Nokia, Samsung and others.

Kaufman Bros said that it believes Dell is returning to the drawing board and may be planning some acquisitions to help get the expertise required.
