Samsung’s Omnia HD will launch with Symbian 5 as its operating system – quite a departure from the original Omnia’s Windows Mobile platform. Rumour has it, however, that Samsung may not just settle for the Symbian alternative and has plans to laucnh several Omnia models running Android.
When we first saw the new Samsung Omnia we were a little disappointed to see that Samsung had picked Windows Mobile 5 rather than the still unreleased 6.5 release. Well, it seems that Samsung were a little disappointed too – having recently decided to ditch WinMo in favour of Symbian 5.
For a time it seemed as though Samsung might release two versions of the Omnia HD – one running Symbian followed by a WinMo 6.5 as soon as it was ready. According to rumours from within Samsung, however, they seem to have had a change of heart.
During the wait for Windows Mobile 6.5 to arrive, Samsung has taken a look at Android and is said to be looking at releasing several new Omnia varients, most of which will run Google’s OS.
This could be mean we get some great Android handsets – the Omnia is solidly built compared to the G1 and HTC Magic and is tricked out with a 5 megapixel camera, good quality screen and integrated trackpad.
