iPhone OS 3.0 isn’t even out yet and people are already finding that it is packed with surprises. A beta release of the new iPhone OS has revealed some choice features that Apple hasn’t announced yet.
Find My iPhone: Hidden away in the Mobile Me settings is a button to enable Find My iPhone. What can this mean? You must already have found your iPhone if you are able to press the button. Do they mean your other iPhone?
It is a nonsense – unless this is some kind of location-based service that lets your phone fire off missives about its current GPS coordinates to Mobile Me. This could let your friends track you as you bumble around town or perhaps even assist in finding your phone again if it falls out of your pocket.
Publish Video: Also a Mobile Me feature. ‘Publish Video’ is the text that appears when you publish an image – at least in the beta release. Now, this might just be a typo, but it would be a very un-Apple thing to do unless Steve Jobs is just deliberately winding us up. Video recording was not part of the iPhone 3.0 presentation but has been on everyone’s wishlist since the 1st-Gen iPhone was launched.
Bluetooth Tethering: Ah. Now we are talking. Apple has confirmed that they have been working on a tethering app that will let you share your 3G connection with a laptop, but they have been unable to negotiate with mobile carriers to actually let them use it. In the beta build there is no obvious ‘Tethering’ app, but a hacker has managed to determine that the code is there.. and activated it. Lets hope that the mobile operators see sense and let us use it without having to resort to a Jailbreak.
