Spark Nano GPS tracks anything, anywhere

The Spark Nano, a tiny, military grade GPS tracker, has just gone on sale to Joe “Paranoid” Public, and it’ll let you follow just about anything, from anywhere, thanks to web and mobile phone tracking.

Lighting GPS has just put the Spark Nano on sale in the US, and for something that’s almost as small as the new iPod shuffle, it’s surprisingly rugged, and even waterproof. The Spark Nano can be followed online or on your phone, and can be “geofenced” so you’ll be given an alert if, for instance, your car is being driven away without your express permission/keys.

Sounds a lot like what Nokia has planned for the Nokia Locate tracking system we saw on show at CES, but on a much larger scale. The Spark Nano’s battery life is also substantially shorter than Nokia Locate’s 18 months, lasting just five days thanks to the GPS chip inside.

We’re not really down with using the Spark Nano to track your children as Lighting GPS recommends, but it’s got great potential for tracking valuables and as an emergency beacon should you get lost off piste on the slopes.

With a little bit of imagination, you could even send a distress signal and your location to Twitter with the Spark Nano if you find yourself stranded. Whether anyone would take any notice, is another issue entirely.

We’ll be tracking this one closely, so expect an update if the Spark Nano starts shipping to the UK.
