Sony Ericsson could be on the verge of breaking up, according to a new report. But is Sony planning a buy out of Ericsson so it can release a PSP phone, and reap the rewards by itself? Read on for the full lowdown.
It appears all is not well in joint venture Sony Ericsson, with the two camps now apparently turning on each other. A new report alleges that Sony is planning to buy out Ericsson’s share in the merged mobile phone maker, and we think we know why: Sony wants to release a PSP phone by itself.
Sony Ericsson was reported to have pitched a PSP phone to Sony a few months ago but was denied, while the recent Sony restructuring put former PlayStation boss Kaz Hirai in charge of “new mobile products“, another indicator of a PSP phone.
Now rumours of a Sony Ericsson break up once again seem to suggest that Sony has got big things planned for a solo mobile arm, and we reckon a PSP phone will be the flagship. Sadly, solid details are thin on the ground.
Could the eagerly awaited PSP2 actually be the PSP phone? Is it going to take on N-Gage? Will it batter the iPhone? We’ll bring you hard facts as soon as we hear ‘em.
