SingStar Sony PS3 gamers have bought over four million songs from the in-game “Singstore” since SingStar released in December 2007. And now Sony have released the top ten most downloaded tracks for the game. The list should be a source of shame to those who, presumably drunkenly, are choosing them.

The list reads as follows:

10 American Pie – Don McLean
9 Baby One More Time – Britney Spears
8 Take On Me – A-ha
7 Eye Of The Tiger – Survivor
6 Girls Just Wanna Have Fun – Cyndi Lauper
5 Torn – Natalie Imbruglia
4 Suspicious Minds – Elvis Presley
3 Just Like A Pill – P!nk
2 Final Countdown – Europe
1 Total Eclipse Of The Heart – Bonnie Tyler

Although, the shame also falls somewhat on Sony’s SingStar Singstore. Of 619 songs currently on, the overwhelming majority are “classic” pop from bygone decades. At time of posting, the featured song was 2 Unlimited’s “No Limit”. Shame on you, Sony for the tired, outdated selection available for SingStar, then.

The problem is 99.99% of modern music is instantly forgetable, the moment it leaves the manufactured charts, it’s forgotten…

I don’t see how Singstar not having last weeks number one, that will be forgotten and replaced by this weeks number one is Sonys problem… The music industry needs to invest in real bands, that make real music, not manufactured bands, and radio one playlists created from greased palms.

MarkG, look at Rock Band and Guitar Hero – they prove there’s an audience for more than just pop pap. And prove that it’s relatively easy to get rights to use good tunes in games. But SingStar seems solely marketed at drunk nostalgic people. The paltry smattering of rock, indie, rap etc. that is on the store is largely similarly MOR/mainstream to the pop. Sony could easily broaden the music available, but haven’t. And it’s more likely they’ll have last week’s forgettable number one than something decent and different!
