Apple may be preparing an OLED iPhone for release later this year, according to a source at Korean electronics giant LG.
LG has been tapped by Apple to supply various sizes of organic light emitting diode (OLED) and an anonymous source has snitched that one of the screens will definitely end up in the next generation of iPhone.
OLED iPhone rumours were quashed by Apple early last year, but it is no secret that Jobs & Co. have been looking to incorporate OLED technology in several of their products.
OLED displays use a thin layer of organic compounds that react to electricity by producing light. They’re more energy efficient than LCD displays, and could lead to much better battery performance. An OLED iPhone would only need to light up parts of the screen that are required to emit light – leading to vibrant colours with much better contrast and deeper blacks.
Could this mean a bold new era of being able to use the iPhone for an entire day without puting it on to charge? An OLED iPhone would certainly help.
On the downside, an OLED iPhone would be pricey, and recent tests showed that OLED displays are prone to attracting grease and oils from fingers. LG is said to be working on a protective layer that will eliminate the greasy fingerprint problem – hopefully this won’t make the price problem any worse.
