The company behind the Flip Video camcorder, Pure Digital, has just been bought out by Cisco in a deal worth more than £400m. What does this mean for you though? Better read on to find out.

We love it when techie Chinese whispers turn out to be true. We told you earlier this month that Cisco was planning to buy the creator of Flip Video, Pure Digital, and the sources were as good as their word. Cisco has just announced it’s buying Pure Digital, for $590m (£405m) in stock.

What does the deal mean for Flip Video? Cisco does wonders with networks, so we could see a new Flip Video service for uploading HD video, a Flip Video model that streams online instantly, or even around your home via a Cisco media streamer.

One thing’s for sure though: anything new will have to be huge if Flip Video is to survive against the new breed of HD camcorders, including Toshiba‘s gorgeous full HD camcorder that’s smaller, and higher quality than the Flip Mino HD. The deal should close by July. Stay tuned for news on the first fresh kit from the Cisco/Pure Digital tie-up.

This is not just good news for the creators pure digital since they struggled with getting this product onto the market, but excellent news for the consumer since we can expect more version and compatibility with other online sharing sites.
