Resident Evil 5 is shaping up to be one of the defining games of 2009 and in its first week it has taken the top spot in the UK’s all-format games chart. Chart Track reveals that the Xbox 360 has nabbed the lion’s share of sales, trailed closely by the PS3 – a dramatic turnaround seeing as Resident Evil 5 is the first Resident Evil outing on a Microsoft console.

Resident Evil 5 is also set to be one of the most successful entries to the series, which started life over a decade ago on the original PlayStation. Last week’s release has been the biggest since Call of Duty: World at War late last year.

Four million copies of Resident Evil 5 have shipped across the globe, while in the UK, PS3 sales have exceeded the launch of the PS2 version of Resident Evil 4 by more than three to one.

Meanwhile, Wii Fit is diligently hanging on in the upper echelons of the charts, climbing again to 2nd place, while Tom Clancy’s H.A.W.X., Professor Layton and the Curious Village and Killzone 2 trail behind.

Last week’s chart-topper, Empire: Total War for PC, has slipped a dramatic seven places with a staggering 70% drop in sales.

Now we’ll see whether those new multiplayer modes and DLC will help Resident Evil 5 sustain its chart topping position.
