Sorry PS3 owners, it looks like you won’t be getting any Mass Effect lovin’. Not for Mass Effect 1, not for Mass Effect 2, not ever. Although we’ve known Mass Effect 2 was in the pipeline for some time, developer BioWare has just given the game its official announcement treatment and at the same time confirmed that Mass Effect 2 is coming to PC and Xbox 360 only.
Earlier this year, hopes for a PS3 edition of the RPG space opera were raised by some vague wording in an meeting with EA CEO John Riccitiello, which pointed to a “multiplatform release” in 2010. Well, the 2010 release date has now been confirmed – early 2010, to be precise – but it looks like multiplatform means just PC and Xbox 360 this time. Boo.
There’s no obvious technical reason why Mass Effect 2 couldn’t work on PS3. The original uses Unreal Engine 3.0, which has been used time and time again on the Sony console, and the sequel is likely to do so again.
Of course, most Mass Effect fans are likely to already own the appropriate platform for the sequel anyway, and so won’t be the ones missing out. But the game has, in our opinion, been one of the best role playing experiences we’ve seen in this latest console generation and it would be a shame for PS3 owners to be forgotten. BioShock and Oblivion have both proved that when it comes to PS3 games, late is considerably better than never.
Mass Effect 2 now has a new trailer available on its official website, along with concept art and all the usual promotional gubbins. Hit the link below to check it out.
