Apple’s late on this one. Really late. We first heard about its plans for push notification last year. It’s the neat system that’ll let you receive alerts from apps without them being open all the time, preserving the iPhone’s battery life but giving nearly all the benefits of multi-tasking. And now it’s here, in the iPhone OS 3.0.

Announcing iPhone OS 3.0 today, Apple admitted it was late delivering push notification, but wanted to get it right from day one. It has been inundated by developers making apps, and it’s going to be hit by a ton of notifications when it goes live, so it makes sense that it doesn’t want to slip up.

In demos today, ESPN showed a new iPhone app, and explained that it would be delivering around 50 million notifications each month. Apple’s Scott Forstall, senior vice president for iPhone Software, said it had taken Apple six months to prepare the iPhone notification service “for companies like ESPN.”

But finally, Apple says it’s ready to go. Push notifications will be available to apps running on iPhone OS 3.0.
