O2 is said to be cutting the price of the iPhone 3G to empty its inventory before the launch of a new Apple handset in June/July.
O2 is planning a big price reduction on the iPhone 3G. Industry rumour has it that the price cut is an attempt to clear O2′s iPhone inventory because it knows that Apple is about to launch one or more new phones by the Summer.
O2 is believed to have plans to give away the iPhone 3G 8GB to customers on its £35/month tariff. The iPhone 3G 8GB is currently free only to £75/month customers and costs £96.89 for use with a cheaper tariff. The 16GB model may become free to customers on the £45/month tariff.
Apple is widely rumoured to be releasing one or more new handsets – including the near mythical ‘iPhone Nano’ – later this year with June/July being the most likely timing. Dropping prices in this way would seem sensible if O2 wants to avoid a glut of older phones clogging up its warehouse after the Summer.
O2 holds the exclusive rights to distribute the iPhone in the UK until 2011, although there has been speculation that Apple may be able to renegotiate this year, leaving open the possibility of another carrier getting in on the act.
