LittleBigPlanet’s next game is to move in a “surprising” direction, according to Alex Evans, co-founder of Media Molecule, the company behind LittleBigPlanet on the Sony PS3. In a wide-ranging interview, Evans has revealed tantalising details about the future of the LittleBigPlanet series, as well as possibly dropping a hint on when to expect Sony to cut the price of its PS3 console.
Evans, in an interview with GamaSutra, says the “whole team is full-on” working on a sequel to LittleBigPlanet, the groundbreaking “play, create & share” platforming game for Sony PS3 that uses user-generated content. (The PSP version of the game is not being handled by Media Molecule.)
Asked where the LittleBigPlanet series would go next, Evans said: “People won’t be like, ‘yeah, they just exploited that thing, and it’s really obvious that they would do that.’ I think LittleBigPlanet is in their future, and hopefully in surprising ways.” Evans was coy on this new “direction”, other than saying: “It’s really f**king cool” and that the idea started from looking at an individual character.
In the interview, Evans also drops a possible hint on when he thinks Sony will cut the price of the PS3: “They’ve had their casual gaming audience on the PS2, and they have to translate that over to PS3 now. That’s how I see PS3 growing. As soon as they drop their price, ho ho ho.” Could that “ho ho ho” line indicate no price cut until Christmas? Or was it just over-exuberant laughter? Evans isn’t telling. Nor is he revealing much on the sequel to LittleBigPlanet, that now features “half a million levels” (created by players of the game).
