Exclusive: Toshiba has been showing us their latest tellies today, but the man in charge of the UK telly line up just let slip there are even better ones just around the corner: Toshiba will start selling TVs with Freeview HD inside within the next 12 months.

Andrew Line, Toshiba product manager for UK TV, told us “the decision has always been that we will support Freeview HD… this time next year I expect to be standing here with them.”

Line also said there were no plans for Toshiba to make Freesat TVs at all, turning its back on the competition from Panasonic, which has had the exclusive rights to make Freesat TVs so far.

Toshiba’s new TVs will pack Freeview HD tuners, or DVB-T2 tuners in technobabble. What’s important is they’ll be able to lap up gorgeous pictures without the need for a satellite dish or cable. It’ll mean you’ll be watching HD within seconds of plugging it in, rather than waiting for a satellite dish to be installed.

Wise move, or is Toshiba about to back the TV equivalent of HD-DVD?

I think Freeview HD will eventually suceed due to the already large install base thus far.

Freesat HD PVRs cost the same as their Freeview HD counterparts.

Because of the brand behind Freeview, they have a clear chance of suceeding with many people having an ariel already installed. Freesat needs to be more aggressive on pricing to ensure it survives. And because Freesat can show more channels and more of them in HD, Freesat should push this too. but it needs to sign up agreements fast.

Yup – being able to have a satellite on your digs isn’t always possible, so anything that uses the aerial is bound to win. But hey, different strokes…
