O2 to grab the Palm Pre?

O2 may be about to sign an exclusive deal to sell the new Palm Pre handset in the UK. Parent company Telefónica has already snapped up the rights in several other countries.

O2 must be rather pleased with how their iPhone exclusivity has turned out, but can they secure the next ultra-desirable handset, the Palm Pre?

Spanish newspaper Expansion (Google translation) reports that Telefónica – the telecoms giant of which O2 is the UK  subsidiary – will sign a deal with Palm to exclusively offer the Palm Pre in Spain, Latin America and the UK.

This would be another kick in the teeth for Vodafone who narrowly lost out to O2 over the iPhone and were said to be fighting hard to secure the Palm Pre. No release date has been suggested for the UK, but Telefónica plans to release the Palm Pre in Spain at least “by the Summer.”
