iTunes gift cards pirated

March 11th, 2009

iTunes gift cards have been pirated, meaning sly shoppers have been able to load up on iTunes songs for a fraction of the regular price. At least, in China. Apple is not going to be happy about this – read on for the full lowdown.

Chinese hackers have figured out a way to generate iTunes gift card keycode numbers and help themselves to songs from Apple’s music store. The hackers have been selling pirated $200 iTunes gift cards on a Chinese shopping site for as little as 17.9 RMB, or just £1.90 – a bare-faced saving of almost 99%!

To make matters worse though, because the pirated iTunes cards use generated keycodes, for every dodgy iTunes card sold, a legitimate iTunes gift card potentially becomes invalid.

Are we about to see a wave of angry iTunes users scratching off their gift cards to find the codes don’t work? Either way it’s bad news for Apple, which is just about to launch the iPhone in China. We’ll be keeping an eye on this one so stay tuned.
