iPod Touch 2G gets jailbroken

March 11th, 2009

The iPod Touch 2G has stood firm against the Jailbreakers, stubbornly resisting all attempts to install non-approved apps on its sleek, second generation self. As of today that is no longer the case – and just in time for those 3rd party app stores, too.

The iPod Touch 2G has been targeted by the Dev Team, the group of iPhone/iPod coders who are behind PwnageTool, one of the easier apps for Jailbreaking the iPhone – removing the copy protection that prevents you from installing apps that don’t meet Apple’s approval.

Although the iPhone 3G fell last year, the Touch 2G (its a different kind of G, don’t worry about it) has proven a tougher nut to crack. The Dev Team explained their victory in the following slightly gloating terms.

“The iPod Touch 2G is now another member of the “pwned for life” family. It has a fatal flaw in its bootrom that means you will always be able to pwn these devices no matter what firmware updates come along.”

Basically, this means “We’ve done it, and even if Apple issue another OS update via iTunes we will be able to do it again”

The breakthrough comes at an interesting time for iPhone/iPod apps, with the opening of Cydia – the first paid App Store clone for Jailbroken devices.
