The Cydia iPhone App Store was formerly a mere installer for Jailbroken iPhone apps, but now it’s the first unofficial paid app store for Jailbroken iPhone too. There is only one app for sale so far, but this could be the start of something much bigger.
The Cydia iPhone App Store is a simple way of installing apps onto Jailbroken iPhones. It uses Linux technology to make sure apps are self-contained, and receive updates in the proper way, just like Apple’s official App Store.
Now, by offering apps for sale, the Cydia iPhone App Store has now gone one stage further, as we mentioned yesterday, and allowed developers to sell apps directly through the installer – effectively becoming the first third-party App Store.
Fittingly, the first paid app is by Cydia creator Jay Freeman – Cyntact, a mod for the Contacts app that shows profile pictures.
To buy apps through the Cydia iPhone App Store you need to authenticate an account using either your Facebook or Google ID and then pay using Amazon Payments.
So far, Apple has not responded to the news that people are actively making money from the Jailbroken iPhone and iPod touch, but given its stance that Jailbreaking is illegal (at least in the US) it surely won’t be long before Steve Jobs makes his feelings known.
