A pair of infrared earphones has been unveiled which will let you control electronic devices remotely with simple facial expressions. We’ve heard of the iPod shake to shuffle feature, but shake head to shuffle? Read on for all the details.
The infrared earphones have been developed at Osaka University. Dubbed the Mimi Switch, the infrared earphones are able to detect facial expressions from winks to smiles and use these to activate its remote control technology.
According to the infrared earphones’ inventor, Kazuhiro Taniguchi, the Mimi Switch could be used to control everything from your iPod to home appliances.
“You will be able to turn on room lights or swing your washing machine into action with a quick twitch of your mouth,” he said.
Sounds good, although we imagine you wouldn’t want to use these with an iPod on a treadmill. Taniguchi plans to make the infrared earphones commercially available within the next two or three years, so watch this space.
