The Beatles: Rock Band game is due to release “worldwide” on 9 September, according to an announcement by MTV, Harmonix and Apple Corps. Yes, that’s worldwide – as in, we won’t have to wait for six months to get the game after the US. The game is also set to launch simultaneously on all three console platforms – the Microsoft Xbox 360, Sony PS3 and Nintendo Wii. The trio of companies also announced a limited edition version of the game that looks set to set new records for expensiveness.

The press release for The Beatles: Rock Band says the game will allow players on mic, guitar, bass and drums to “experience The Beatles extraordinary catalogue of music through gameplay that takes players on a journey through the legacy and evolution of the band’s legendary career.” Combined with the title “The Beatles: Rock Band”, the quote makes the game sounds less like the initially-hoped-for psychedelically trippy “experiential progression through and celebration of” The Beatles game and more like, well, The Beatles: Rock Band.

The biggest surprise then is that the game is set to set new records for the price of a limited edition pack. US pricing has the game only as $60, but the limited edition version will be an eye-watering $250 (Rock Band 2′s Premium Bundle is only $190). The pack is set to feature new instruments modelled on ones The Beatles used in their career – but exactly which instruments these are has yet to be announced.

Will The Beatles: Rock Band be worth the extra cash? Or are their tunes not quite rocking enough for the Rock Band treatment. Answers on a postcard please…
