Palm Pre investor Roger McNamee is confident in the new Pre smartphone. So confident that a) he owns a 39 percent stake in the company and b) has publically stated that he expects all the owners of the original iPhone to switch to the Pre by the end of July.

The Palm Pre is due for release sometime before the Summer. Roger McNamee noticed that the release date will roughly coincide with another important smartphone milestone – the end of the iPhone early adopter’s mobile contracts.

“You know the beautiful thing: June 29, 2009, is the two- year anniversary of the first shipment of the iPhone,” said McNamee, “Not one of those people will still be using an iPhone a month later.”

“If you bought the first iPhone, you bought it because you wanted the coolest product on the market,” continued McNamee, “Your two-year contract has just expired. Look around. Tell me what they’re going to buy.”

Bold words, especially when you remember that the iPhone has come a fair way since its launch – with more storage, faster processing, 3G and a whole heap of Apps and services. Perhaps the switch to the untested Pre might not be quite the no-brainer that Roger assumes…
