Nintendo’s new DSi is whipping up a storm of controversy, thanks to police in America who fear its combination of web browser, internet access and built-in camera could make it unsafe for children.

Sergeant Adam Holland of the Fort Smith Police Department in Arkansas says the Nintendo DSi is a pedophile’s dream device. “Now not only can the children be contacted, but they can be asked to provide pictures, video,” he says, pointing out that kids could use the DSi to circumvent parents’ restrictions on when and how they use the web.

“It’s a common misconception that, if I have control of this environment within my home and our computer usage, I therefore control what my child has access to” he told 5 News in Arkansas. “That’s proving not to be the case.”

Should parents be worried about the DSi being used by crooks to target children? Absolutely not. And if they are, Nintendo has built in parental controls to block out websites, or web access altogether.

The Nintendo DSi goes on sale in America on April 5, and will hit British stores on April 3.

Boy, if only the DSi could upload pictures (which it apparently cant) or had flash (which it doesn’t), or if the cameras could be used for conferencing (which it can’t) of some sort.

    Pointless, useless, pathetic paranoia.

    Wow. Wrong, wrong, and wrong.

    Sure, it has a camera.
    Sure, it has internet capabilities.

    1. The external camera has a bright pink/red LED next to it, and when in use, it glows. Secondly, when a photo is taken, (Thanks to hardware update from the DS lite,) a VERY loud shutter noise is made, that can’t be turned down/off.
(Nintendo knows what they’re doing ;])

    2. The camera(s) can NOT be used for conferencing (talking through video.)

    3. The photos can, however, be shared through a wireless connection between DSi systems, and through a complex set of steps, they can be uploaded and sent through a computer. (With use of SD cards.)

    4. The users that are using the DSi for it’s internet access know what they are doing, and what’s out there. And if a pedophile does happen to communicate with your child, they would know what to do.

It’s less likely to happen on a child’s gaming system than on a computer at your home.

The police we’re only trying to help, and they were doing their job.
