G1 owners in the UK have started to see update messages pop up on their screens as T-Mobile rolls out the RC9 Android OS update. This is the UK version of the RC33 update we told you about a month ago.
G1 users should have received the Over The Air update already, or will do so over the next couple of days. The European firmware uses a different (but annoyingly similar) naming scheme to the US versions. RC9 is essentially the RC33 US firmware with a few localisation changes.
Users who have had their G1 updated to RC9 report that paid apps now work and there are small improvements to saving picture MMS messages. The G1 now has a ‘check for updates’ button on its settings screen, which should mean users don’t have to wait quite so long when T-Mobile decides to dole out new firmware releases in the future.
Although the update fixes many bugs in the G1′s operating system, users who have been enjoying root access should be aware that this update will turn it off. RC9 sadly does not come with the ‘Cupcake’ features such as a more usable onscreen keyboard. Hopefully that will soon be one of the updates that users can now check for…
