Kindle just came to the iPhone. In app form, at least. Amazon has released a software version of its Kindle ebook reader for Apple’s mobile. If you’re in the US, you can now download ebooks from Amazon’s massive library, ready for gawping on the iPhone or iPod Touch.
Unfortunately, those outside the US will have to wait. The Kindle for iPhone app is only available through iTunes in America, although it is a free download.
Once fired up, it allows owners to buy ebooks from their Mac, PC or iPhone web browser and then have them transferred to the Kindle app wirelessly. The first few chapters of each book are also available free, so you can browse before buying.
At the moment, only Kindle books are supported, so you can forget any dreams of having newspapers and magazines delivered to your iPhone. Still, the Kindle app proves one thing: Amazon’s real fortune is to be made with book sales rather than hardware, just as we predicted at the launch of the Kindle 2.
