Killzone 2 has pipped Halo Wars to take top spot in the UK games chart and has become the second fastest selling UK title in the console’s history, according to Chart Track. Microsoft’s vaunted Halo franchise couldn’t keep PS3’s long-awaited exclusive from the number one position, which dislodged Street Fighter IV from the lead, pushing the PS3 version down to sixth place.

Killzone 2 has only been bested by the launch of Gran Turismo 5: Prologue in the UK, and the graphically stunning shooter is now the fourth best selling PlayStation title ever.

Microsoft probably won’t be too upset by only scoring second position with its Halo themed RTS spin-off, but overall sales of the game have only reached a fraction of those achieved by the FPS blockbuster Halo 3. Halo Wars managed to scrape a mere 17.6% of Halo 3’s first week sales, but it has easily topped the RTS charts, outselling former champ Command & Conquer 3 by three to one.

On the software side, Killzone 2 is making its mark for Sony, but it’ll also be interesting to see how well the brutal shooter serves PS3′s hardware offensive. The new 80GB Killzone 2 PS3 bundle arrived on the same day as the game’s release, costing £299. Could this be enough to turn the tables on the Xbox 360 once more?
