A London band with a passion for tech has been the first to perform a live track solely using apps available from the iTunes App Store. The all-girl group called The Mentalists performed a cover of MGMT’s ‘Kids’ using a selection of iPhones and iPod Touches. Okay, they did the vocals themselves but we’re still waiting for the first app that can turn our tuneless caterwauling into something listenable. Check out the awesome video on the turn.

If you’re planning to produce some live electropop using your iPhone or iPod Touch, then you’ll probably want to check out the following apps, which were used by The Mentalists in their performance. Ocarina by Smule lets you blow into the mic to generate, unsurprisingly, ocarina-like sound, while DigiDrummer Lite provides the beat.
Retro Synth and MiniSynth can also be used to fill out the bass and keyboard parts – although like The Mentalists you might need a pair of devices to make a decent number of keys available for live gigging.
