Time Capsule links with Mobile Me for storage anywhere

March 3rd, 2009

As well as updating the Time Capsule and Airport Extreme software for better networking, today Apple made its networked drive accessible via the internet using Mobile Me. It’ll let owners tap into their files wherever they are.

Of course, you’ll need to be a Mobile Me member, and own a Time Capsule, but assuming you can tick those two boxes, you’ll be able to access the device’s hard drive anywhere in the world.

Simply register it with Mobile Me, and Apple says it’ll appear in the sidebar of any Mac you’re logged into. “It’s like having your own personal file server wherever you go,” it says.

You’ll need to be using OS X Leopard to see the remote drive, but that’s the only other requirement. It brings Time Capsule into line with most other networked hard drives, and has the potential to make the wireless storage box much more useful. At the moment it’s unclear whether previous generation Time Capsule hard drives will get the new features too.
