Quake Live progressed to its open beta phase just a week ago and, so far, the transition hasn’t been going completely smoothly.

Eager Quake Live players have been battling the queuing system, which has become bloated with tens of thousands of users. Id has reassured fans that it has a solution though. Read on for the latest after the jump.

“Reducing the queue size is our utmost priority,” a Quake Live Twitter post revealed.” It can’t be solved by throwing more hardware at it though, otherwise it’d be fixed already.” Sometimes users have been faced with queues of up to 50,000 people and last week the average queuing time for a game of Quake Live was around 35 mins at peak times.

A bit of patience is always necessary while a game is still in beta testing, particularly so when it’s facing the sudden stress of new users. Id has been surprised (pleasantly so we’d imagine) by the sheer weight of players wanting to try out Quake Live, which is a browser-based version of Quake III Arena.

It also seems likely that the long queues have had a knock on effect on the queue size, with users leaving the game to queue up, then forgetting about it and wasting their slotbefore getting timed out again, automatically.

Last night, Id took the Quake Live site down to perform more maintenance and it’s already clear that it’s getting on top of the problem. A quick check revealed a queue of just 11 people to get in. Hopefully in a few days, we won’t even have to wait to play Quake Live at all.
