The Sony PSP2 is on the way, and due to launch possibly by autumn 2009, according to Dave Perry, founder of Shiny Entertainment and current Chief Creative Officer at Acclaim. And it won’t have a “stupid battery-sucking UMD disc drive”.
Perry’s news on the Sony PSP2 came initially in the form of an over-excited “tweet“, but since then he’s spoken to further back up his comments – despite Sony denials of any new hardware being that close.
“I spoke to a developer who is working on it right now,” Perry told Kotaku. “I’ve been pounding on Sony for a long time to make the PSP relevant and not to let Apple stroll away with the portable game market. Why are so many investors investing in Apple game development? Trying to pitch a PSP game to investors right now is brutal.”
While Perry is clear on the Sony PSP2 being real, he’s less clear on how exactly it will work. Initially he told Kotaku that Memory Sticks would be used to hold games. But only as a sop to retailers. Eventually, all games would be downloaded to a computer or PS3 for side-loading onto the PSP2, or over-the-air direct to the Sony PSP2 itself.
