Snow Leopard – the next update for Mac OS X – is still underneath Apple’s usual veil of secrecy. But what’s this? Some pictures and a video clip have been discovered that show off the Leopard’s new spots.
Snow Leopard was announced last June as an improved version of OS X, designed to power the next-generation of Apple Macs. Snow Leopard adds support for multi-touch controls (like the iPhone, but think Macbook touchpad) and is optimised for multi-core processors.
World of Apple has some leaked screenshots of Snow Leopard in action that show off both the visual touches and interface enhancements (of which there are few) and reveal more info about what is going on under the hood.
From pics of system dialogs, we now know that most applications under Snow Leopard have been rebuilt as 64-bit code, offering a much smaller memory and processor footprint and the same is true of most system processes too, which should speed things up considerably.
QuickTime Pro is no more – the basic, free, QuickTime now comes with all ‘Pro’ features enabled by default. Notable by their abscence from Snow Leopard are Quicklook – an in-icon preview feature for audio and video files – and the new and improved QuickTime X.
