The KIT Eco Charger is an energy-saving charger for Nokia mobile phones. Want to save the planet, trim your electric bill and have a spare charger? Carphone Warehouse has just slapped the KIT on sale in the UK.

The KIT Eco Charger is.. well, a mobile phone charger for Nokia phones. It does have one unique selling point – it will automatically switch itself off after the phone is charged, meaning that you can leave it plugged in all night and not waste a penny of extra ‘leccy

“If everyone in the UK used a KIT Eco Charger we would save approximately 300,000,000 kwh of electricity per year,” said a Carphone Warehouse spokesperson, “At an average cost of 28.5p per kwh, that would be a collective saving as a country of £85m!”

Well, yes, assuming everyone in the UK started using a Nokia over night as well, but we take the point. The KIT Eco Charger will fit any recent Nokia handset – sadly there doesn’t seem to be bundled adaptor for older phones.

I presume you mean the ones with the ridiculously small co-axial pin. That being the case there’s at least one “recent Nokia handset” it won’t fit 6500 Classic – Micro USB only!!

What about the environmental cost of making and distributing this new charger kit? Will they really save as much energy as they take to make over their life-time, particularly as Nokia are bound to change the size of the pin again soon, making it completely redundant. THINK BEFORE YOU BUY!
