Mass Effect 2, BioWare’s hotly anticipated follow-up to the November 2007 sci-fi smash, is to use the save game files of the original game, BioWare has confirmed. With the rumours circulating that Mass Effect 2 will no longer be exclusive to the Xbox 360, that at least gives Microsoft a big advantage over gamers on the rival Sony PS3.

On BioWare’s own community forums, a poster checking that save games would be transferrable was answered by Jack Lamden, Quality Assurance, BioWare saying: “Hang on to your Mass Effect 1 saves.” Chris Priestly, Community Coordinator also said: “don’t delete your Mass Effect 1 saves yet” and Jarrett Lee, Marketing Manager also added: “keep your savegames guys”. In short, the message from BioWare is that Mass Effect 2 will definitely use save game files from the original. Presumably, that will be to allow you to continue to play as character’s you’d previously levelled up and kitted out.

Obviously, that only applies to players on the PC and Xbox 360 – unless EA/BioWare bring out a version of Mass Effect for the PS3 before it releases Mass Effect 2. That seems unlikely. So PS3 players of the game, if it comes out on the PS3, will be unable to gain access to the customised characters Xbox 360 and PC gamers have built up and grown to love.

Either way, Mass Effect was one of the standout games of the last few years – an epic action role-playing game with truly cinematic visuals and a brilliant storyline. So Mass Effect 2 is making for a very exciting proposition.
