The LG Solar phone has rounded off Mobile World Congress by flying the eco-friendly flag clear and high for LG. It’s still a prototype, but uses solar energy to reduce its carbon footprint dramatically.
LG execs must have brought a couple of suitcases full of new phones to the Mobile World Congress last week. We had Android, Windows Mobile, sliders, touchscreens and finally we had this unnamed prototype that forms part of LG’s environmental strategy. We’re in love with it, and have christened it the LG Solar phone.
The LG Solar phone has a large solar panel on the battery cover that LG claims can provide around 3 minutes of talk time after just ten minutes of charging in natural daylight. If suitable light is available, LG say that there should be no need for additional charging adapters.
“Using renewable solar energy in the mobile handset is an example of our ongoing efforts to help create a safer, cleaner environment for our customers,” said LG CEO Dr Scott Ahn President and CEO.
If all goes to plan, the LG Solar Phone will launch in Europe by the end of 2009. Whether it’ll actually end up being called the Solar phone remains to be seen.
